ESG Investing, Farm Management, Green Cities: Three Student Projects For Sustainability

Sustainability skills and environmental awareness are a priority in many corporate jobs for new engineers as eco-friendly initiatives, and green businesses become crucial.

Here are three engineering projects initiated by ESILV students, set to protect the natural environment and human and ecological health through innovation and technologies.

Creation of an ESG criteria assessment database

As part of our 4th year PI² at ESILV, we were asked to work on an “ESG-compliant Investments evaluation” yearly project. ESG criteria (Environment, Social, and Governance) have been established as the pillars of responsible and sustainable investment in the financial sector.

Purely financial aspects are no longer the only ones to consider when evaluating an investment. ESG criteria are now taking more and more weight in the investment decisions of all players in the financial sector.

Our project aims to create and model an efficient methodology to assess investment funds on ESG aspects. Our rating system is composed of 4 main axes: transparency, socially responsible investment (SRI) strategy, implementation and governance. Each fund obtains a score between 0 and 1 for each of our 19 variables, for each axis and then an overall score which is a pondered average of the four axes.

Green City Mobile App

Our project is a simple and playful mobile app whose objective is to allow urban residents to make their city greener and more pleasant to live in. The application enables visualizing the locations on which everyone can act! Citizens can see their donations transformed into a green space, such as thickets, a flowerbed, or even trees.

Therefore, we offer city officials the possibility to further flower their cities through the financial contribution of the citizens who are willing to contribute and a tool that allows them to monitor and manage their tree areas.

Therefore, our objective is twofold: to allow citizens to regain ownership of their city and provide city governments with a management tool for their green spaces. All of that, to green up our stifling cities!

Smart Farming Mobile App

Smart farming is about making the farm and its workers as efficient as possible. A typical farm is quite large, and there is a lot of space to cover to make sure that everything is running smoothly, both in terms of maintenance and weather conditions.

Each plant will require different amounts of water, and this will vary depending on the humidity and temperature. Also, remember that wild animals and bad weather can damage plants. So there is a lot of information to consider to keep the farm at its maximum efficiency.

Our project is to gather all the crucial information in a mobile application to make the farmers’ work quicker and easier. Each farmer has a user account on this application, allowing direct access to the cameras spread around the farm. Therefore, they can monitor the plantations over large distances much faster. They also have access to all the information from the sensors allowing for tracking the conditions of cultivation and storage in real-time. Another feature is that they can consult a to-do list and add items to it. In addition, they also have access to the farm’s stock and inventory, which allows them to track all materials and resources. Finally, administrators can add, delete, or modify users.

It is important to note that only users have access to this information. In conclusion, we have centralized all the farm data on the cloud, allowing us to have a workspace that is organized, efficient, and intuitive for optimized farm management.
